Why Power BI Data Models Matter More Than You Think

A practical look at facts, dimensions and scalable reporting.

Why Power BI Data Models Matter More Than You Think

One of the most common challenges I see with Power BI is teams jumping straight into visuals without spending time on the underlying data model. A strong star schema sounds like a technical detail – but it’s the difference between a report that scales and one that falls over as soon as you add a few more measures.

I encourage teams to think in terms of facts and dimensions: facts for events and numeric measures (quotes, policies, revenue, sessions) and dimensions for the context (date, product, channel, device, segment). Get that right, and everything from filtering to drill-downs becomes easier and more reliable.

In regulated environments, that structure also supports clear governance. It’s much easier to answer, “Where does this number come from?” when your model is well-defined. That’s a key theme in my work: clarity, traceability and trust in the data.
